What would it feel like if we believed that everything that happened in our lives was meant to be? Is this idea a part of your belief system? When unfavorable events happen in our lives, some will see a learning opportunity while others will make suffering the only viewpoint. Regardless whether we choose to apply meaning, we can always look back in our own history and see how each event pointed us in the direction to who we have become.
Who we are now is being heavily influenced by our past. If we had changed even one minor event in our lives, it could have dramatically altered who we are today. Comforted by this or not, looking back with a “should have” or “could have” attitude really only encourages resentment. Maybe there are some things we don’t like about who we are today. Future self-comfort depends upon our willingness to create a better version of ourselves.
What we do now can dramatically influence who we are for years to come. That can seem overwhelming, exciting or even daunting. There’s no doubt that remembering our history and planning for the years ahead has an important place in our minds. Really, right now is what matters most. Let’s use our past as a tool and affix our eyes toward what we hold most dear. Intentionally aligning with our values in this day will change the possibility of future regrets into peace.
Action:
Do you have regrets? What are they? Right now you can use your history as a tool. Look deep into your past actions or inactions and see what it is you would have changed. Do you wish you would have acted differently? Why do you wish you had done something else? This gives you a clue into what it is you truly value. That in itself is a great lesson because now you have the choice to move forward knowing how you would like to be. There’s no telling if a similar situation will arrive to rewrite your response, but at least you have the benefit of clarifying your innermost morals. By revisiting the values you hold most dear, you can now adjust your actions to align with them.
